Fashion for Pets

2 November 2009

Once upon a time the idea of dressing your pet was restricted to coloured collars and matching leads. How times have changed! Accessories for pets are a diverse and colourful as those available for their owners.

Not only are collars and leads state of the art fashion accessories but now we find ourselves looking for dresses, jumpers, pants, hats, coats, shoes and fancy dress costumes for our best friend.

Let’s not forget their means of transport has also become a fashion accessory with designer carry bags and slings available in all sizes, colours and designs.

Today’s pets are so well dressed with co-ordinating fashion accessories that they could easily be placed on the cover of a fashion magazine and not look out of place.

New York is host to the Pet Fashion Week in August showcasing clothing; accessories and pet equipment that will keep you pet ahead of the pack. Pets have become such an essential part of people’s lives that they are pampered accordingly as they are part of the family.

The show is sponsored by various pet companies such as Pet Elite, Modern Dog, Fido and other companies and magazines.

Pet fashion and accessories are readily available both online and instore. Online boutiques make it easy for pet owners to leisurely browse the catalogues deciding on the best outfit for their pet. Sizes with measurements make it easy to purchase online. Often online stores are able to offer merchandise at a fraction of the cost of instore products due to minimal overheads involved.

Instore purchases are often impulse buying – you walk into the store to buy food for your pet and see a cute little jumper that would look gorgeous on your little mate and there are matching shoes that he just has to have. Instore products enable accurate sizing as you can have your pet with you and often you are allowed to try the outfits on your pet to make sure the fit is perfect.

There are many discount shops that offer budget priced outfits for your pet. T-shirt type shirts are perfect for summer being light-weight and yet still very fashionable – often they sport some form of logo or phrase written on them.

Winter sees the heavier jumpers and parkers available at a small price that will keep your pet both warm and dry without breaking the bank.

Special seasons bring out the best in costumes for our pets. Halloween sees our pups as pumpkins and witches whereas Christmas turns our best friend into Santa’s helper or even Santa himself!

Whatever you chose to dress your pet in – just make sure they won’t be laughed at by other pets in the neighbourhood! It would be devastating to be a social outcast because your owner has bad taste!
